Roupa Suja – women working
together for a better future
Located in Rocinha, one of the largest favelas in Latin America, this association
of local women works for the improvement of conditions
in one of it's poorest neighbourhoods, Roupa Suja.
ABC has supported the education project 'The Workshop of Knowledge' since 2006, an after-school programme supplementing
normal schooling, for the children in the local community.
Support is provded on all basic curriculum with a focus on reading, writing and numeracy. Extra-curricular activities are provided, as well
as cultural field trips, computer literacy classes and
use of the library.

- Two sessions per day, morning and afternoon
- Classes split into age groups: 7-10 years and 10-14
years
- Teachers chosen from the community and specially
trained
- Classes supplement teaching received in state schools:
help with homework, reinforcement of classwork
- Classes of around 10-15 pupils, ensuring children
receive greater individual attention than they do
at state schools
- Classes are open to children who used to attend
the daycare and the wider community
- Further classses are run in computer literacy successfully training 10 young people now in work
- Informal education for adolescents to move away from gang culture and into work
daycare provision
- Operates from 7.30am to 4.30pm
- Age 4 months to 6 years old
- Allows parents to go to work
- Provides care, including bathing and medicine and
vitamins for the malnourished
- Three meals per day, also open to the wider community
- Roupa Suja wants to expand the building to provide
space for children on the waiting list
