Renascer – supplementary schooling
Based near João Pessoa, this project works in the favela Renascer III, one of the most violent areas of the city, but geographically separated from the main part of the state capital.
Renascer provides educational opportunities for the poorest children of the favela. 50% come from single-parent families. The project receives no support from local government, yet state schools often send their own pupils for help if they are falling behind.
ABC has funded the project for a number of years, enabling the refurbishment of buildings, the purchase of computers for IT classes and covering the salaries of the teachers. Renascer also took part in the Manual Colourido project.

demand for school reinforcement
In the past, Renascer offered a wide range of activities, including art and dance classes, capoeira and music. But, there was huge demand for basic school reinforcement and the pressure on space forced the project to specialise in this field.
The project aims for children to be able to attend technical college at 16, which will allow them to a reasonable income in the future.
For example, a former Renascer pupil attended SENAI, a college for working in industry. He hopes to work as an electrical automotive mechanic. For this job, he will earn 3-4 times the average wage he could have expected to get as an uneducated labourer in the favela.
