Andrew Webb, New Chief Executive
As you already know from our last update I am the new CEO at ABC Trust and have been taking a hand-over from Mark Ereira these last few weeks.
I have nearly 20 years experience across both the not-for-profit and the private sector including over 10 years in international development. Most recently I was Director of Development at International Alert and just before that I graduated as a Sloan Fellow from London Business School.
There is enormous potential for ABC Trust to grow and develop its work and I am looking forward to working with the trustees and supporters of ABC in putting together the plans that will take ABC into its next phase of development.
In the meantime we continue to need your support and involvement and I hope to meet many of you at future events.
It only remains for me to actively encourage you to contact me with any comments or suggestions which you think will help in my first few months at ABC.
My email is andrew@abctrust.org.uk

| project update: Projeto Manual Colourido |
 |
Manual Colourido is a revolutionary exercise in painting – for and by the children of Brazil. The results of this project will be launched at London's Gallery 32 on 8th December.
ABC Trust Chief Executive, Mark Ereira, writes on the vision of the project.
There is so much talent, warmth and energy in Brazil's favelas; grinding poverty and lack of opportunities often conspire against allowing this to shine through. All children have vitality and eagerly want to learn new things, gain skills and express pride in their immediate environments. The children involved in Manual Colourido are very proud of where they live, and, wow, they sure can paint!
As an intrinsic part of our work, ABC always wants to try and provide as many children as possible living in these very poor favelas opportunities to learn, enjoy and develop their creativity. Giving hope and inspiration are key ABC goals, as are building children’s self-esteem and confidence.
Seeing 300 canvases created by these children being exhibited in UK galleries is a moving expression of our original vision. What we had hoped for has been achieved.
Manual Colourido is a truly inspired collaborative work-of-art, involving Brazilian children and project partners, artists and a UK-based charity. A fortuitous set of circumstances led to my meeting with London-based Fabiane Perrella – a Brazilian installation artist and designer.
It became abundantly clear that Fabiane had the drive, vision and compassion to energise and animate ABC's original project ideas. Her dream has always been to complete a project in her home country by working with Brazilian children at risk. British artist Pete Vosper enthusiastically assisted. They have both worked incredibly hard and we are all indebted to them. It has been a real pleasure working with such gifted people.
I selected two project partners who I knew would cherish the hosting of artists and work in an international arts initiative. They are in Recife and Joao Pessoa, the heartland of Brazil's north-east where the colour and light of their built landscapes would bring form and shape to Manual Colourido's intentions.

Virgin Mobile Big Ride 2006
In May this year, three teams of Virgin Mobile staff took part in a 500-mile cycle ride across England – 'the Big Ride' – in aid of ABC and Cancer Research UK.
Our special thanks go to everyone who took part and sponsored the teams – they have raised over £50,000 for the two charities! This is a phenomenal result, and will help us to achieve so much for at-risk children in Brazil.
The route started at the Virgin Mobile offices in Middlesbrough, heading to the company's Trowbridge site in the West Country before the finale in London, reaching the Leicester Square office after five days of cycling for 10 hours each day.
Despite wet and very windy weather, the teams made it safely and we'd like to thank them for all their efforts once again, and also congratulate them on their success!

project update: ABC supporters' visits
ABC supporters Bruce Cherry and Will Henley recently two of our projects in Brazil – Bruce went to see the work of Luz de Escol and Will experienced Viva a Vida. Below are some excerpts from the experiences.
Bruce Cherry: "The Luz de Escol currently houses sixteen kids aged from two months to eight years old, placed in temporary care by the justice system. They are all currently unwanted. Not orphaned by death but by choice, though not theirs; innocent victims of neglect, brutality, molestation and sexual abuse.
On arrival at this temporary place of refuge they were all undernourished, traumatized and, without this lifeline, probably destined to be the next generation of drug users, child prostitutes or members of the violent gangs that currently plague Brazil’s cities and favelas. [...]
[The project's] ABC funding has been of vital importance. It has allowed them to employ the medical and welfare professionals they needed, not just to improve child-care, but to get them formally accredited with the State. Without this there was no future. Wages for the eleven staff is paid by the NGO (and for most they are no more than the legal statutory minimum of 100 pounds a month). A local paediatrician gives some free time. Local people, few who could be described as rich, donate food, clothes and toys. [...]
In a push chair, sleeping quietly under the soft and welcome breeze of a fan, lies a 3-month-old baby. Marcos [who I'd met earlier] comes out of his shell and protectively sidles up to the tot. 'What's his name?' I ask in poor Portuguese but which is sufficiently understood for Marcos to answer 'Michael'. There's true affection in his voice. An unwanted three year old instantly protective of an unwanted 3 month old. It breaks your heart."

Will Henley: "'Eduardo, he has a price on his head,' says Gisella. 'If he were to return to his neighbourhood now, the drug dealers would probably kill him.'
Just over a year ago, Gisella Hanley set up the Viva a Vida Sitio Florilar centre to treat deprived young drug addicts from Salvador, in north-eastern Brazil. The centre offers a unique residential drug rehabilitation programme to more than a dozen boys aged between 13 and 17.
Last year, Viva received a £10,000 grant from the Action for Brazil's Children Trust, which helped cover the rest of the start-up accommodation, telephone and operational costs for the year. [...]
Viva a Vida – which can be variously translated as either 'hooray for life' or 'live life' – addresses the dependencies of the children using a technique known as the therapeutic community method (TCM). 'TCM believes that the group is the main ingredient to therapy,' explains Gisella.
Trained psychologists, most of who live in the centre, administer the inpatient programme over nine to eighteen
months. 'The staff bring different ideas, structures and philosophies to Viva, but each follows the core therapeutic community approach,' she says.
Five treatment phases, each with their own objectives, are tailored to each child's day to day progress. Structured activities, involving counselling sessions, group talks and games, create a ritualised and stable daily routine. Particular importance is attached to attaining and restoring trust."

Our thanks to both Bruce and Will for their reports.

Brian May portrait
The Action for Brazil's Children Trust has teamed up with online art gallery Oak Apple Art and its artists to produce a stunning composite portrait of ABC Trust Patron and rock legend, Queen guitarist Brian May.
Brian kindly provided a photo which Oak Apple Art then cropped and digitally divided into 12 sections. These were then passed to 12 of their artists who each painted their section of the portrait in their own individual style.
These paintings were scanned and digitally stitched together. The result is a wonderfully eclectic mix of visions of Brian May which Oak Apple Art is selling in aid of ABC Trust.
The prints are produced on top quality canvas and beautifully framed in natural wood. They retail at £500, all profits from which are being donated to the ABC Trust to help some of Brazil’s poorest and most underprivileged children.
ABC Trust would like to thank Oak Apple Art and its artists for their considerable artistic skills, time, commitment and enthusiasm.

Silverstone Grand Prix Ball 2006
For the second year running we are the beneficiary charity at this spectacular event which kicks off the British Grand Prix weekend. Last year we raised £115,000 from the evening and we hope to exceed this on Friday 9th June.

ABC guests can also enjoy a private reception at the beginning of the evening with the chance to mingle with the celebrity guests, including stars from the sport, entertainment and music worlds.
If you would like to buy single places or a table you can do so. Individual places cost £700 and a table costs £7050 (incl. VAT). For more information contact the ABC office.
