The Darkness light up Leeds charity dinner auction
Music's most talked about rock band donated a signed guitar to charity auction in aid of the ABC Trust for Brazil's disadvantaged children.
Next generation rockers The Darkness are boosting a charity appeal for Brazil's street children when a guitar signed by group members goes under the hammer at a Leeds charity dinner.
The top of the range guitar, which retails at £2000, will be placed on display at Music Ground on Call Lane, Leeds LS1 before going under the hammer. Here punters can have a good look at the instrument before mounting a bid.
In addition to on-the-night bidding the guitar will also be available on the auction website eBay and bids can be sent direct to sean.hicks@smartandcook.co.uk for collectors and bidders who cannot attend the charity dinner.

'City of God' director becomes ABC patron
Fernando Meirelles, director of the internationally acclaimed Brazilian film 'City of God', has agreed to become a patron of the British Charity Action for Brazil’s Children Trust (ABC Trust).
Welcoming his decision Jimena Page, the Charity's founder trustee said: "We are delighted to have Fernando's ongoing support. 'City of God' has reached such a wide audience and it has therefore been instrumental in publicising the plight of Brazil’s street children all over the world.
"Since making this highly successful film, Fernando and the rest of the team have set up a charitable film project, Nós Do Cinema, in Brazil. This project is now being sponsored by ABC Trust. We have decided to fund a film produced by the 'City of God' kids, which will document our work in Brazil. This is empowering for all the kids concerned and will serve to widen our audience still further."
The Nós Do Cinema project is supporting many of the cast involved with the original film. The actors, all hand-picked from the streets of Rio, are now involved on both sides of the camera.
ABC Trust's new patron commented: "This is so much more than a charity project, this is an investment in new talent and the future! We have kids who will grow into excellent actors, directors and technicians and that is what I'm interested in: quality."
Mark Ereira, ABC Trust's Chief Executive officer added: "We are delighted that Fernando has agreed to help us. 'City of God' itself and the local film project he has subsequently set up amply demonstrate his genuine commitment to the cause. The philosophy behind Nós do Cinema is in total keeping with our remit, to give kids the tools to get off the street and look towards a meaningful future."
Meirelles recently attended a special Charity screening of 'City of God' at the Everyman Cinema in Hampstead. The evening, which included a popular Question and Answer session hosted by film critic and writer Iain Haydn-Smith raised a total of £3520 for ABC Trust.

fair trade shop donates £1000 to ABC
Bury St Edmunds Fair Trade shop, Just Traid, is donating £1,000 to Action for Brazil's Children Trust, a local charity that works with impoverished children in Brazil. This is linked to the opening of an exhibition of the Brazilian children's artwork in Bury St Edmunds library.
The donation has been made to help fund the training and education work of ABC Trust's Circo Picolino project based in Salvador, North-east Brazil. Circo Picolino brings together some 200 children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds and trains them in the art of circus performance.
The older participants, aged between 14 and 17, learn how to become circus instructors and in turn pass their acquired skills on to younger children ensuring the continuing success of the project.
Commenting on the donation, David Wakeford from Just Traid said:
"It is great that we can pass on the money we have earned selling fair-traded goods from developing countries. We are pleased to be able to support a charity that gives poor, deprived and homeless children an opportunity to learn new skills and earn a living with a fair wage."
Local volunteer Jacquie Campbell, who helps out at ABC Trust's offices in Bury St Edmunds, made the application to Just Traid. Jacquie added:
"A new group of young people are currently waiting to start the circus instructors course and this generous donation from Just Traid will ensure that their training starts in the new year."

project news: ABC supports two new projects
Due to fundraising successes during 2003 ABC Trust is delighted to announce that it is able to financially support two new projects, one in Joao Pessoa, Paraiba and the other in Rio de Janeiro. Trustees agreed to support these two projects at a recent meeting to select which new projects could be helped.
One of the latest projects is Nós Do Cinema, a special media and film project set up by City of God film director Fernando Meirelles. This project helps some 50 young boys and girls each day, and is based in Rio. ABC Trust has committed £5000 towards salary costs of the project's key staff.
New funding is also being made available to 'grassroots' project in Paraíba called Projeto Renascer so that they can expand their educational and training provision to more children and young people at risk.
Further information is available on our projects page.

Sebastião Salgado donates photograph
Internationally renowned Brazilian photographer, Sebastião Salgado has kindly agreed to donate one of his photographs to ABC Trust in order to raise money.
The photograph entitled 'Portrait of a Homeless Girl in State of Parana, 1996' is an extremely moving and beautiful work of art. Salgado records images that are meant to unsettle viewers through their critical yet compassionate depiction of social issues. His images are some of the most memorable and arresting images of the last century.
Not only is Salgado a photographer but also an artist and author due to his intellect as well as his eye for composition and knowledge of his medium. ABC Chief Executive, Mark Ereira is extremely grateful to Salgado for his kind contribution to help those children who are in need in Brazil. Thanks are also due to Sebastião Salgado's agent, Neil Burgess, for all his help in arranging this kind donation.
This piece is being put up for auction at various ABC Trust events with a reserve price of US$2200 (£1500) but we are very keen to take bids via our website.

ZepFest 2003
A Led Zeppelin convention was held in Toronto, Canada on 11th and 12th April 2003. The event was hosted by Jeff Healey's Club and included a performance by the tribute band Zeppelinesque on the 11th. The following day, vendors from all over North America were selling memorabilia.
Due to the generous support and donations by Zeppelin fans from Canada, the US and the UK there were several items that were sold to raise money for the ABC Trust. The most popular items sold were several magazines that had been personally signed by rock legend (and ABC founding patron) Jimmy Page. Additionally, there was a silent auction for two prints made exclusively for this event by celebrated photographer Frank Melfi, which Jimmy had also taken the time to sign.
The total raised at the event was US$2000, far exceeding the expectations of the organiser, Cindy Wilkie.
The ABC Trust and Cindy would like to thank everyone who contributed to the event, lent their support/time or made donations to make it such a success. Special thanks are due to convention organiser Grant Burgess, photographer Frank Melfi and event helper Kat Dalton. (ABC Trust would also like to extend yet more thanks to Cindy for her unfailing efforts and enthusiasm.)

Bebel Gilberto becomes patron of ABC Trust
ABC Trust is delighted to announce that Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto has kindly agreed to become a Patron.
Jimena Page, founder of the ABC Trust was delighted at Bebels decision, saying:
"I think it's wonderful that such a culturally important musical artist has agreed to support our work with children at risk in Brazil. I warmly welcome her and I know that her involvement will produce many new and exciting opportunities for the charity."
Bebel herself was also enthusiastic, stating:
"I am honoured and delighted to support ABC Trust in their efforts to empower disadvantaged youth in my country. As a Brazilian I know first-hand how difficult these kids' lives are – providing these children with their basic needs, helping them regain control of their lives and giving them the hope and inspiration to transform their future – these are some of the reasons that this cause is so close to my heart."
