It was a first for ABC to be involved in a Drum and Bass night but thanks to Michael Pollitt we were the toast of Manchester, as an array of DJs dropped beats in our name. Read on to find out more about Michael's first fundraising event.
After being inspired by my sister’s current charity work of cycling around South America I decided that it was about time for me to do my bit. I had never done any charity work before and honestly didn’t realise how tough it would be. For the event I drafted in some great help from a number of close friends and put on a club night in Manchester which featured a local DJ competition and some big headline acts. It was really great of all the acts to either play for free or at a very discounted rate and with some of the acts travelling up from London it was nice to see them getting in to the spirit of things (even their agents waved their fees).
On the night we held a tombola which featured prizes donated by DJs, local artists and other club nights. The tombola did really well and people were really happy with the prizes they won. We managed to raise some money for the charity and created a lot of awareness. After doing the event I have a new attitude towards charity work and I realise just how difficult it can be. With the current climate people are struggling enough and they need a good reason to part with their cash. Good causes such as The ABC Trust need as much help as possible and I feel that it’s not just about making donations but also getting involved, there’s more to it than throwing a few quid in a bucket. We all have a duty to help, no excuses.
