The Big City Sleep 2012

Not long now.. The Big City Sleep is taking place on Friday 23rd March this year. As it is later it will be warmer so we expect to see as many of you as possible! This year we have also partnered with Street Child United in preparation for The Street Child World Cup taking place in Rio de Janeiro in 2014. Read on for more information about the event and information on how to sign up.

The income inequality is a main cause for the large amount of people that live in extreme poverty in the world today. There are thousands of children and young people who are marginalized by society, without access to education, health, housing, leisure or even a family to care for them. Those children alone are not able to change this situation, but we can help them make this happen. With this objective, ABC Trust (Action for Brazil's Children) invites you to participate for the 3rd edition of the "Big City Sleep", that will take place at Spitalfields Market in London, on the night of 23rd March, 2012.

In a fun and entertaining way, through a series of Brazilian dance and music performances, such as, capoeira, samba and “forró”, Londoners will swap their comfortable beds at home for cardboard boxes for one night and brave the cold. Jimena Page, founder of ABC Trust, explains that this event is not an attempt to undermine or trivialize the issues faced by the street children in Brazil, but to recreate, to a certain extent, the challenges they face in their daily life. “The goal of the “Big City Sleep” is to show our society some aspects of life of those children who live in the streets in Brazil, the difference is that participants can go back to the comfort of their homes the next day”, said Jimena.

The "Big Sleep City" aims to raise funds for our partner projects, dedicated to children and young people in vulnerable situations in Brazil. Over the last two years, we were able to raise £ 30,000. ABC's goal is to continue growing and raising funds to touch the lives of many more children and their families. Among many of children we were able to help so far, is Mailson, a boy who lived on the streets of Salvador, in the of Northeast Brazil, who from a very early age was beaten by his mother and became a user of crack. Today, he attends the project 'Viva a Vida' and is rehabilitated. "I thank Viva a Vida for the opportunity and support they gave me to leave the streets and fight for a better life," said Mailson.
