Crescer e Viver – growth and awareness through the arts

A 'social circus' with outstanding results, Crescer e Viver works through arts workshops and classes to develop skills, increase self-confidence and promote awareness of others.

ABC has provided funding since 2006. Modest building and refurbishment work has allowed the expansion of activities and the project has been able to support a dedicated staff. Crescer e Viver works with fellow ABC project partner Cinema Nosso at Pastor Waldemar School.

encouraging education

By learning to work together and express themselves, and with the project's support, participants have shown increased school attendance, improved grades and a reduction in aggressive behaviour.

building self-esteem

Main activities are free, run six days a week and focus on three areas:

  • Art and Street Culture - basketball, graffiti, capoeira
  • Social Circus - circus skills and citizenship classes
  • Artists Life - producing special shows - 'spectacularios'

Training is offered for older students as tutors, nurturing other children's discovery of the arts and awareness of opportunities for their futures

reaching out to the community

There are also other activities available for the wider community:

  • The 'Big Screen' – weekly screenings of films and documentaries followed by discussions – 200 attendees each month
  • Information and Community Learning Room open to all – 10,000 visits annually
  • Social support team works with parents and guardians; around 20% of families receive regular assistance
