Gueto Poético – urban arts to activate citizenship
Children in
favela communities in Salvador are benefiting from access
to circus arts, dance, music and poetry at two modest, but dedicated, arts and cultural centres.
This project is deeply connected to the local community and involved in the
national social movement striving for access-for-all to the arts. The underlying aim is to prompt active participation of the community in combating social exclusion and poverty. ABC has provided funding for the construction
of a centre and for the ongoing activities and
the basic costs for the volunteer leaders of the project.
Children are nurtured in their education and their talents
are developed to the fullest. Public performances help to improve skills, build confidence and increase their sense of participation in their communities. Over 500 members of the public regularly attend
their shows.

Popular guitar, circus skills, street theatre and poetry
workshops engage the children’s
interests and also develops their capacity to learn, increases their motivation and
builds self esteem. All of which aims to combat exclusion and poverty.
This region in the North East of Brazil has the highest
rate of child labour in the whole of Brazil, a rate
which is increasing as more children drop out of the
education system. Communities in Salvador face issues
of acute social exclusion, unemployment and economic
poverty.
Removing children from the risks of the violence, empowering
them with life skills and creative capacity allows them
to develop a vision of a more positive future.
